Self-inflicted death streamed on Facebook live
While investigating a shooting incident elsewhere Monday night, police were called to Park Plaza Apartments because a resident was threatening to kill himself.
Cases involving possible suicide are not usually reported but this individual was streaming on Facebook Live and the incident was apparently witnessed by people in the community as it unfolded.
Police Chief Chris Robertson said he arrived as the scene along with other officers and members of the Union County Sheriff’s Department who were called in to help deal with the multiple scenes.
Robertson said they tried to de-escalate the situation and talked with the individual but were unsuccessful and he did carry out his threat.
The video was taken down by Facebook officials but apparently was available for some time, Robertson said.
The victim was an active duty veteran and may have also been dealing with personal issues, officers said.
The Union County Sheriff’s Department is helping investigate this case while New Albany police focus on the shooting slightly earlier at Albany Acres. A male juvenile was shot and killed, a female was shot and later died and a third victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
Police have not yet determined what led up to the shooting.
