An alert citizen helped thwart burglary of a gun shop and gas station in New Albany early Friday although at last report three suspects were still on the loose.

Police Chief Robertson said a person on his way to work about 3:30 a.m. saw individuals breaking in through the front door of 2A Armaments and called police with a description of the vehicle.

One of the officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it but the suspects fled with the officer in pursuit on I-22 headed toward Memphis.

“We alerted Marshall County SO and Holly Springs PD that we were in felony pursuit,” the chief said. “Holly Springs set up spike strips at the Holly Springs exit.”

The vehicle hit the spike strips and stopped immediately. “The three suspects bailed and fled on foot,” Robertson said.

A New Albany police vehicle and Holly Springs police vehicle were involved in a minor crash as the chase ended with both officers being transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. “They were both treated for minor injuries and released today,” Robertson said.

The chief said he contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, U. S. Marshals Service and the Memphis police gang unit in an effort to identify the suspects. The break-in at the gun store was captured on surveillance video.

As investigation continued, the chief said they received a call from the Pure gas station on Hwy. 15 saying the business had been burglarized and their safe stolen.

“We found the safe in the back of the vehicle,” Robertson said. He added they believe most if not all the stolen weapons were recovered, pending a complete inventory at the store.

“They were all AR-type assault rifles and Glock semi-automatic handguns and likely would have ended up in the hands of criminals,” he said. “There is no telling what would have happened as a result.”
