There was a lot of activity in New Albany today, centered around native son, William Faulkner. The 2016 Literary Fest presented a day focusing on the written, visual and spoken arts.
- One hundred or so fans of the written word attended the William Faulkner Competition Luncheon on Friday, September 23rd. Attendees at the luncheon, held at New Albany’s First United Methodist Church, were treated to food by Tallahatchie Gourmet and music by the Andrew “Cadillac Funk” Yurkow trio. Winners of the 2016 competition, which drew entries from local, national, and international locations, were announced and honored. The competition distributed $5000 in cash prizes. The guest speaker was author/raconteur John Hailman, a former U.S. Assistant District Attorney, journalist, wine specialist, civil rights attorney, etc.
- The Faulkner and Folk Art exhibit opened at 5:00 PM at the Magnolia Civic Center. A large crowd of folks interested in the visual arts turned out to admire the twenty-five or so entries, in a variety of media, in the art festival. The art competition was a juried event with cash prizes being awarded in several categories.
- Tallahatchie River Players presented “Rhubarb,” a one-act play by Deanna Greaves of Seminary, Mississippi. The play was chosen at random and was presented on the Tanglefoot Trail Plaza for fans of the art of the spoken word.
