Officials name man killed in Pontotoc shoot out
Official sources have released the name of the man killed Monday evening, July 1, in Pontotoc in a gun battle with local and state law enforcement.
He was Terry Payne, age 52.
Law-enforcement officials have been been instructed by counsel to release no further information about the incident until the investigation is complete and ready for presentation to a grand jury.
The Mississippi Bureau of investigation (MBI) is in charge of investigating the shoot out death, which occurred within the city limits of Pontotoc.
The incident commenced with a traffic stop by a Union County deputy sheriff in southern Union County. Payne reportedly fired shots from a handgun at the deputy, while fleeing southward into Pontotoc County.
He was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with law-enforcement officers.
