Things to remember about the municipal party primaries April 6

Voting to select Democratic and Republican party nominees for mayor, chief of police, alderman-at-large and aldermen for Wards One though Four will take place Tuesday, April 6.

In New Albany, voting will take place at the renovated community center at 307 Wilson Street just off South Central, rather than at the courthouse as in years past.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and anyone in line to vote at 7 p.m. will still be allowed to do so.

Because these are political party primaries, each voter will have to choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot. If you vote Tuesday and a runoff is needed in three weeks you can only vote in the same party runoff as the primary you chose.

The last opportunity for qualified voters to cast absentee ballots in person will be from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, April 3. City Hall will be open those hours for the convenience of voters.

One may still cast a mailed-in ballot but it must be postmarked no later than Election Day April 6 and received by the municipal clerk within five business days (affidavit ballots, cast when a voter does not have acceptable ID or there is conflict about voter registration, also have to be resolved within five days).

You will be required to show an approved photo ID as usual.

No campaigning will be allowed within 150 feet of any entrance to a polling place, unless it is on private property. When voting was at the courthouse there was no close campaigning although the nearby church and bank property might be argued as private.

The community center lot should be clear for 30 feet from every entrance of all people except elections officials, voters waiting to vote, or authorized poll watchers. Loitering is not permitted.

It is illegal to take pictures of your marked ballot.

Voters are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines concerning COVID-19 at the polls.

Although voting will take place at the community center, the votes will be counted in the circuit courtroom as usual because of technology reasons.
